77 COVID-19 cases reported

(To watch the full press briefing with sign language interpretation, click here.)   The Centre for Health Protection today announced it is investigating an additional 77 COVID-19 cases, all locally transmitted.   At a press briefing this afternoon, the centre’s Communicable Disease Branch Head Dr Chuang Shuk-kwan said 30 of the new cases were identified in the community testing centre or mobile specimen collection stations in Yau Ma Tei.   Dr Chuang said the new cases involve at least 18 Nepali and six Indian people, and 41 of the newly infected patients live in Yau Tsim Mong District.   Thirty-seven of the new cases have unknown sources of infection.   Of the linked cases, one is from the Tseung Kwan O - Lam Tin Tunnel construction site cluster.   There was a new case reported at Hiu Fung House at Fung Wah Estate in Chai Wan, involving unit 13 several floors above 12/F.   Dr Chuang said the centre had collected 11 environmental samples from two Hiu Fung House units for virus testing. Three samples tested positive.   The centre had already arranged for more than 40 residents of units 13 on 13/F and above to be transferred to quarantine centres.    Dr Chuang noted that 20 of the new cases involve residents in the specified area in Yau Ma Tei to Jordan. She added that mandatory testing notices will be extended to three buildings there, as well as another building in the specified area in Sham Shui Po.    She explained why it will take some time to evaluate the effectiveness of further expanding the scope for compulsory testing.   “Because of the quite long incubation period of COVID-19, with any control measures, you will see the result in maybe one or two weeks’ time if the intervention is useful.   “So it may take some time for the number of cases (in Yau Ma Tei and Jordan) to come down if the intervention measures are effective.   “I understand the Government is closely monitoring the situation and will adjust its strategies accordingly.”   For information and health advice on COVID-19, visit the Government's dedicated webpage.
