Year-round fishing in reservoirs set

The Water Services Department today announced that it will launch a pilot scheme on April 1 to allow anglers to fish year-round in reservoirs.   The department said the relaxation of the fishing period in reservoirs will allow anglers with valid fishing licences to fish in the Plover Cove Reservoir and the Tai Tam Group of Reservoirs throughout 2021.   The Tai Tam Group of Reservoirs includes the Upper Reservoir, the Byewash Reservoir, the Intermediate Reservoir and the Tai Tam Tuk Reservoir.   To prevent overfishing from affecting the environment and water quality of reservoirs, anglers holding valid fishing licences were only allowed to fish in reservoirs during the fishing period from September 1 of each year to March 31 the following year.   Given the ever-growing public interest in fishing activities and that local reservoirs are one of the most popular fishing spots, the department is planning to relax the restriction on the fishing period under the premise of not affecting the water supply’s reliability and safety.    Through the pilot scheme, the department will assess the impact of relaxing the fishing period on reservoir environment as well as the species and quantities of fish therein.   When the scheme is completed, the department will conduct a review to determine a long-term implementation plan.       Anglers wishing to fish in local reservoirs must apply for a licence. People aged 13 or above can apply for a licence at a fee of $33.
